Week 8 and 9 Question 1

Digital Immigration

Okay so prier to us having to answer this question I had no idea about digital immigration!

Digital Immigration refers to those who where born in an age reliant on analogue technology as appose to digital and who have had to learn how to use and interact with digital technology, such as computers, the internet, video games etc.
The opposite to a digital immigrant is a 'Digital Native', some one has grown up in a world full of digital technology and who is a 'native speaker of the digital language' (Perksy,2001:1) namely our generation.
It seems that a major issue that surrounds this digital immigration debate is that education. Teachers are generally part of the immigrant side, whereas the students are most definitely digital natives, they know far more about the internet, gaming consoles, mobile phones etc than their teachers,"our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language" (Perksy.) The issue arises when the teachers have to be taught before they can even think about teaching their students and the fact that students have completely differently ways of thinking and have changed during this digital era. Teaching today can not be the same as what it has been for previous generations.
